Ethiopia a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa. It shares borders with Eritrea to the north, Djibouti to the northeast, Somalia and Somaliland, which is Internationally recognised to be an autonomous region of Somalia, to the east, Kenya to the south, South Sudan to the west and Sudan to the northwest. With over 109 million inhabitants, Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world and the second-most populous nation on the African continent with a total area of 1,100,000 square kilometres (420,000 sq mi). Its capital and largest city is Addis Ababa, which lies a few miles west of the East African Rift that splits the country into the Nubian and Somali tectonic plates.
Ethiopia and Turkey Relations
Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Ethiopia started in 1896 with the exchange of delegations during the rule of Sultan Abdülhamid II and Emperor Menelik II. Following the opening of the first Ottoman-Turkish Consulate General in Harar, in 1912, the first Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Sub-Saharan Africa was opened in Addis Ababa, in 1926. The Ethiopian side opened its Embassy in Turkey in 1933. The Ethiopian Embassy in Ankara was closed in 1984 during the Communist Derg regime and was re-opened on 21 April 2006.
Mutual high level visits, the inauguration of Turkish Airlines’ direct flights to Addis Ababa as of April 2006; the establishment of the first TIKA (Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency) Office in Addis Ababa in 2005, first in Africa; furthermore, a continuous increase of development aid programs towards Ethiopia have been significant steps which has contributed to the development of our relations.
H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey paid his first official bilateral visit to Ethiopia in the Sub-Saharan Africa on 21-23 January 2015. H.E. Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, former President of Ethiopia, who was also the former Ethiopian Ambassador to Ankara paid a state visit to Turkey on 6-10 February 2017 and attended to the II. Turkey- Africa Economy and Business Forum on 10-11 October 2018.
